<image:caption>Dr Vikas Mehta is the Fruth/Gemini Chair, Ohio Eminent Scholar of Urban/Environmental Design and Professor of Urban Design at the School of Planning, College of DAAP, University of Cincinnati. Mehta’s work focuses on the role of design and planning in creating a more responsive, equitable, stimulating, and communicative environment. He is interested in various dimensions of urbanity through the exploration of place as a social and ecological setting and as a sensorial art. This work emphasizes the sense of place and place distinctiveness, design and visualization of urban places, cities, and regions as just, equitable, and sustainable living systems. Mehta has (co-)authored and (co-)edited six books and numerous book chapters and journal articles on urban design pedagogy, public space, urban streets, neighborhoods, retail, signage and visual identity, public space in the Global south and more. His book The Street: a quintessential social public space (Routledge, 2013) received the 2014 Book Award from the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) and was also a finalist for the 2014 Francis Tibbalds Award for Best Book of the Year. His most recent book Public Space: notes on why it matters, what we should know, and how to realize its potential will be published in 2022. Abstract</image:caption>

      <image:title>Alexander Denzler</image:title>
<image:caption>PD Dr Alexander Denzler is a historian of the early modern period (16th – 18th centuries) with a particular interest in the (changing) conditions of political and social life. His three principal areas of research are first the significance of handwriting and printing for premodern knowledge production, administration, and rulership. In this regard, his studies aim to illustrate that the production and dissemination of knowledge and information was vital to premodern state-building. In addition, Denzler’s second book project concentrated on the usage, maintenance and perception of early modern infrastructure. Finally, he has worked extensively on the topic of jurisdiction in the pre-modern era. In this context, he leads an Academic Junior Networkin collaboration with others. After receiving his Ph.D at the University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Germany (2016), Denzler completed my habilitation (2021). The habilitation on the topic ‘Preservation, Use, and Perception of Streets in the 16th Century’ (Erhalt, Nutzung und Wahrnehmung von Straßen im 16. Jahrhundert) will soon be published by Böhlau (Brill) in the series Ding, Materialität, Geschichte. In 2018 he edited the anthology ‘The use and perception of streets and roads (1100-1900)’ (Die Nutzung und Wahrnehmung von Straßen und Wegen), a thematic volume of the Jahrbuch für Regionalgeschichte. The streets of the early modern period are also the subject of an article he wrote for the Encyclopedia of Early Modern History Online. Currently, Denzler is a Senior Research Assistant at the Chair of Early Modern History and Comparative Regional History in Eichstätt, Germany. Abstract</image:caption>

Her research has an interdisciplinary focus and centres around two main themes: the impact of institutions on groups in the margins of early modern society, and life in city streets before industrialisation. She is the author of the prize-winning Women and entrepreneurship. Female traders in the Northern Netherlands c.1580-1815 (Amsterdam 2007), and her work has appeared in journals such as SIGNS, Continuity and Change, Journal of Urban History, and The Historical Journal. Since 2016 she directs The Freedom of the Streets Project, a large research project funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. In the context of the project she is working on a book project on gendered urban experience in Edo, Amsterdam and Batavia. She is also editor of the Early Modern Streets: A European Perspective (forthcoming with Routledge), and has partnered with the UvA MA Education, HvA, F-Site and Studio Bertels to translate research findings from the Freedom of the Streets project into educational materials for secondary schools. <image:title>Suzanne Hall</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr Suzanne Hall is Associate Professor in Sociology and Deputy Head of Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She is an interdisciplinary urban scholar and her work connects the asymmetries of global migration and urban marginalisation. From the grounded perspective of peripheral street economies, Hall explores the racialised frameworks of citizenship and economic inequality and their everyday contestations. By moving between globe, state and street, she engages with the margins as a capricious space in which social sorting, cultural intermixtures and claims to difference are forged. Hall is compelled by how wide geographies shape our knowledge of the urban condition, and she is invested in the ethnographic possibilities of seeing political economies through the everyday. Her research focuses on spatial formations of precarious livelihoods and citizenship including: racial formations of colonisation and apartheid in Cape Town in the working life of refugee women (funded by a Philip Leverhulme Prize); the de-industrialisation of work from the vantage point of streets in urban peripheries in Birmingham, Bristol, Leicester and Manchester (funded by an ESRC award); and the global ‘regeneration’ of urban space in the context of a South London Street (supported by an LSE Cities Fellowship). Hall has collaborated with Huda Tayob and Thandi Loewenson on a curriculum on Race, Space and Architecture, and has been part of the Digital Makings of the City of Refuge project led by Myria Georgiou, and the Beyond Banglatown Project led by Claire Alexander. She is currently co-supervising PhD projects engaging with social and political formations of urban space including homelessness in Athens (Maria-Christina Vogkli); migrant solidarity in Istanbul (Helen MacKreath); and Palestinian life and land in Jerusalem (Lucy Garbett). <image:title>Claire MacRae</image:title>
<image:caption>Claire MacRae is the City Archaeologist at City of York Council (CYC) providing archaeological advice on planning applications and local authority schemes. She has worked at CYC for ten years completing the York Historic Environment Characterisation Project and compiling Heritage Impact Assessments for the Local Plan before moving onto managing one of the most important and sensitive archaeological resources in the country. Previously she spent several years working in commercial archaeology and providing Local Planning Authority archaeological advice as part at Tyne and Wear Archaeology Service. As part of her role she has overhauled the City of York Historic Environment Record (HER) recently making it accessible online and secured funding from Historic England to commission a large deposit-modelling project for the city. She is also involved in academic projects such as the York-Dublin Axis Reconsidered (University of Glasgow and York) and Roman York Beneath the Streets (Cambridge University).
